It's 2:00 am and you and your friends have just finished an evening of celebrating. As you walk to your cars, you look and see the flashing lights and increased law enforcement presence in the area. What lie up ahead are the “all too familiar” Sobriety Checkpoint and DUI Saturation Patrols. What you didn’t know is that these checkpoints and patrols are well thought out and planned months in advance. Unbeknownst to you, your location, the time of year, even the time of day/night has been targeted as a”DUI High Risk Volume Area”.
Here is just a brief sample of the San Diego areas you are most likely to be arrested for DUI:
The International Border – Tijuana, Rosarito Beach and Ensenada
Pacific Beach – Along Grand Avenue with beachside bars, local neighborhood pubs and dance spots
The Gaslamp District – 16 ½ block area in the heart of Downtown San Diego
All Sporting Venues – Petco Park, Qualcomm Stadium, Del Mar Race Track, San Diego Sports Arena (to name a few)
Sycuan, Viejas and Barona Casinos – Along the streets and highways leading away from these Indian reservations (Interstates 8 and 67) Temecula Wine Country
All Local Popular Beaches - La Jolla Shores, Mission Bay, Coronado, Imperial Beach, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas
This past holiday season alone, San Diego County Law Enforcement Agencies sent out special patrols to stop, question and arrest anyone suspected of drinking and driving. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), California Office of Traffic Safety, and more than 80% of the California Highway Patrol had their officers out on the roads every weekend in December.
Most recently, the Automobile Club of California reported that they are looking into the increase of young females driving under the influence. You can now be targeted due to your gender and age. In San Diego County, female drivers between the ages of 18-24 injury-related or fatal crashes rose 124%. There is a belief that the alcoholic industry is “targeting” females by producing sweeter and fruitier flavored beverages.
Be aware that more officers are patrolling the DUI High Risk Volume areas during peak times and seasons.
Here is a sample of the peak times and seasons that DUI Sobriety Checkpoints and Saturation Patrols are most likely to be found:
Between 7:00 – 8:30 pm – right after happy hour
1:30 – 2:30 am – bars close
Friday – Sunday
Month of December
Three-day holiday weekends
So you may ask yourself what does all of this have to do with a dui website? Plenty. You can greatly reduce the risk of being pulled over and protect yourself again the chances of being “in the wrong place, at the wrong time” by following a few simple suggestions:
While making your reservations for the evening, build into your plans how you can arrive home safely. If everyone in your party wants to drink responsibly, have the numbers to the local taxi cab service in your wallet or make the pick up reservation ahead of time.
Nobody is asking you to curb your “fun” -- just your “car” if you have been drinking. .The police can now initiate a DUI arrest on the basis of “perceived impairment”. Don’t always believe that you must be stumbling drunk to be stopped.
If you find you are going to visit one of the more popular tourist attractions in town, try leaving the area earlier then most other people. The police expect you to wait until the end of the evening.
Follow your instincts. If you know that you are going to tailgate at a game or go down to the International Border for some fun, look into the public transportation that is readily available. An “all day” trolley riding pass is $5.00, which is thousands of dollars cheaper than defending yourself against a DUI case.
